"When I received
the Serena's Song commission from Robert and Beverly Lewis, she
was already retired, in foal and in full winter coat.
Fortunately, there were many quality racing photos available of
her, and for the first time, I used video, from her Santa Anita
races. It was tremendously helpful to be able to study her
action over and over, and in slow motion. This is an example of
a sculpture in which I did not see the horse personally, yet I
feel I succeeded in capturing her, particularly the gritty
determination that made her a champion. Gary Stevens, her
jockey, was also pleased with his likeness." Note:
this piece is now on display in the
National
Museum of Racing in Saratoga New York. |
